Te Pōkaitahi Tikanga (Māori Development) (Kaupae 3)

Learn about Māori culture, customs and protocols with this tikanga course. 
This qualification is for people who want to develop some understanding of tikanga (plural) within a specialist field founded on a Māori world view.

Graduates of this qualification will have some knowledge and skills to support and participate in the practice of tikanga under limited supervision. Graduates of this qualification will be able to apply knowledge fundamental to tikanga practice within a chosen field of work or study and across the community in general.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • explain cultural concepts associated within a context where tikanga are practiced as an expression of mana ao tūroa;
  • use a range of reo structures and tikanga practices as an expression of mana reo;
  • apply factual knowledge of tikanga concepts to explain own relationship to the physical world as an expression of mana whenua;
  • work collaboratively with others to carry out a range of tikanga practices and concepts as an expression of mana tangata.

TIKA301 - Mana Tangata

Course Type:  Core

Description:  This kōwae ako focuses on mana tangata as applied to tikanga Māori concepts, values, and systems. Tauira will work collaboratively to explore the areas of whanaungatanga, pepeha, pūrākau and pakiwaitara. The kōwae ako also explores tikanga Māori and its connection to identity.

TIKA302 Mana Whenua

Course Type: Core

Description: This kōwae ako focuses on the linkages of tikanga Māori with the individual, society, and the whenua. Tauira will research tikanga Māori concepts and explore their own relationship to the physical world as an expression of mana whenua.

TIKA303 Mana Ao Tūroa

Course Type: Core

Description: This kōwae ako focuses on tikanga Māori practices as an expression mana ao tūroa. Principles and behaviours, such as kawa, tikanga, and gender roles, will be explored and applied to a marae and pōwhiri situation.

TIKA304 Mana Reo

Course Type: Core

Description: This kōwae ako links te reo Māori to tikanga Māori as an expression of mana reo. Tauira will explore the use of whakataukī, whakatauāki, kīwaha (as applied to the kāinga), and te reo Māori (particularly in a reo-ā-iwi context).
