Lecture series launched to protect mātauranga Māori

Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi launched a series of mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) recorded lectures at an event at Te Mānuka Tūtahi Marae last week. More than 100 iwi and business leaders, Awanuiārangi Council Members and staff were there to celebrate the series launch.

The series of lectures is about mātauranga as explored through the experience of Māori experts and practitioners. Contributors include members of the governing council (Te Mana Whakahaere o Awanuiārangi), the Chief Executive and senior staff. It is called the Tā Hirini Moko Mead Lecture Series of Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi - Ngā Kauhau Whakamiramira i te mātauranga Māori a Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi: Rārangi Tuatahi.

In his opening address, Tā Hirini explained that there is a revival of interest in mātauranga Māori.

“It is important that we share our mātauranga in order for people to understand what it is, and one of the ways that we can do that is by launching this series of 13 lectures”.

Chair of Awanuiārangi Council, Justice Layne Harvey acknowledged Tā Hirini for his inspiration.

“I was honoured to be asked to participate and these lectures are now a useful resource for our people. I am sure that there will be a second or even a third series to come, so that is something to look forward to in the future.

“Enhancing, maintaining and preserving elements of mātauranga Māori for our current and future generations is critical.  In a small way, this series represents a beginning of that formal process for Awanuiārangi.”

The Lecture Series has been created to promote cross-cultural understanding, encourage dialogue, and inspire a renewed sense of connection to mātauranga Māori.
