Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi offers the highest standards of tertiary education from certificate to doctorate levels, including programmes for international scholars of indigenous studies. Our vision is to promote, grow and sustain Māori language, knowledge and culture, according to tikanga Māori practice.

This is an exciting time to be part of Māori and indigenous scholarship, and our success relies on the excellence of our people and our connection to the communities that we serve. We offer a stimulating teaching, research and professional working environment in one of our three campuses: our beautiful main campus in Whakatāne, Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) and Te Tai Tokerau (Northland).

The Bachelor of Māori Performing Arts (Ngā Mana Whakairo a Toi) programme is a three-year degree that aims to produce kaihaka who are valued repositories of mātauranga Māori, Te Reo Māori, tikanga Māori and Māori performing arts and ensure graduates have the mātauranga and skill base fully recognised within Māori communities.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Lecturer to join our experienced team.  You will assist with student learning by teaching at scheduled monthly weekend noho and wananga, providing regular tutorials and supporting student learning through the use of our online e-Wananga facility.

Your primary responsibility will be to plan and implement quality teaching and learning experiences for students.  This will include setting relevant, appropriate and timely assessments, and providing academic support and pastoral care, with a strong focus on student success and achievement.  You will also be required to develop and maintain relationships with kapa and their Kapa Kaiako.

Applicants will have:

  • Demonstrated excellence in Māori performing arts at all levels and to the highest level.
  • A Masters’ degree qualification relevant to the field of Mātauranga Māori and an under-graduate qualification in Māori Performing Arts or at least 5 years’ experience in teaching Māori Performing Arts. Those applicants who do not hold a completed Masters’ degree but can evidence commencement of study towards a Masters’ are also encouraged to apply for this role.
  • Tertiary teaching experience to Masters’ level.
  • A teaching qualification.
  • Experience in delivery of the prescribed course and programme, particularly in the discipline of Māori Performing Arts.
  • Proven research experience.
  • Strong kapa networks.
  • Knowledge of tikanga Māori, and fluency in Te Reo Māori.

We offer a supportive working environment and welcome candidates from all backgrounds to apply.
