Ms Coates is a partner at the law firm Kāhui Legal. She holds a LLM (Master of Laws) from Harvard University as well as a Bachelor of Law (hons) and a Bachelor of Arts (hons)(majoring in Māori Studies) from the University of Otago.

She has been a law lecturer at the University of Auckland, is a Fulbright scholar and was also the recipient of the NZ Law Foundation Ethel Benjamin Scholarship and the Ngārimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Masters Award.

Ms Coates is a member of the New Zealand Council of Law Reporting and has held positions as: the co-director of the Aotearoa/New Zealand Centre for Indigenous Peoples and the Law; Associate Director on Ngāti Awa Group Holdings Limited; and Associate Director on Māori Investments Limited.

At Kāhui Legal, she provides advice to clients on Te Tiriti o Waitangi, public law, litigation, commercial matters, Māori land law, and Māori, human and indigenous rights. At the University of Auckland Ms Coates taught courses on: the Treaty of Waitangi; tikanga; jurisprudence and legal ethics.

Ms Coates was appointed to Te Mana Whakahaere o Awanuiārangi in 2019.
