New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 4)

This programme aims to prepare you for tertiary study and help your employment opportunities. Graduates will develop and improve practical study skills for tertiary study to support their success when entering undergraduate level study or their chosen career, including developing inquiring minds, self-confidence and introduce tauira to Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori.

The certificate will: 

  • enhance your study skills to support your success in future studies
  • increase your literacy and academic writing
  • increase your numeracy and confidence in mathematics
  • support your understanding and application of science
  • introduce you to a range of information sources and fundamental research skills
  • develop your negotiation, conflict resolution and team work strategies
  • enhance your personal and professional skills
  • explore your career interest in Nursing, Teaching or Humanities.
  • increase your confidence and knowledge in te reo and tikanga Māori

The programme has two pathways

  • General pathway preparing you to enter the undergraduate teaching or humanities programme
  • Nursing pathway preparing you to enter the undergraduate nursing programme

CCP401 Rangatiratanga – Advanced Tertiary Study, Career and Computer Skills

Course type:  Core

  • Description:  This course teaches students to construct a well-reasoned evidence based argument within their chosen field of study and career.  Students will gain the skills of strategies and techniques to resolve conflict situations.  Students will also develop a study and career plan.

CCP402 Te Reo me ōna Tikanga

Course type:  Core

  • Description:  Students will learn to locate, select and analyse whakataukī that describes whanaungatanga between, whānau, hapū, iwi, and whakataukī that apply to social events within the community, on the marae or for a career and/or field of study.  Students will learn about three Atua Māori and analyse their roles and relationship to time, weather and the seasons of the year.  Students will gain a te reo Māori vocabulary and sentence structures used to describe people.

CCP403  Pūkengatanga – Science and Mathematics for an identified context

Course type:  Elective

  • Description:  This course introduces students to broad operational and theoretical knowledge in science and mathematics necessary for their career and field of study. Students will also learn effective communication skills for science and mathematics relevant to an identified context.

CCP404 Kaitiakitanga - Māori Models of Practice, History and Legislation for an identified context

Course type: Elective

  • Description:  Students will be introduced to a range of Māori models of practice and the relevant legislation for their career and field of study. Students will also learn to clearly communicate appropriate information sources to solve a problem for a career and/or field of study. They will also learn to construct a reasoned and researched argument and communicate using a range of appropriate media.

CCP405 Manaakitanga – Major Project for an identified context

Course type:  Elective

  • Description:  Students will extend their skills by conducting a major project which includes the problem solving, the ability to work independently and collaboratively and applying analytical and critical skills. Students will develop their own long-term career plan.

CCP406 Knowledge Systems and Practices for an identified context

Course type:  Elective

Description: Students will learn to construct a well-reasoned and evidence-based argument which applies subject-specific knowledge to solve problems.
