Develop a career supporting healthcare teams in primary care practice.  

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the primary care service within the health and wellbeing sectors with people who have the skills and knowledge to provide administrative and clinical support across a primary care practice, under broad direction and delegation from a health professional.

This is an entry-level qualification designed for people who intend to develop a career supporting tāngata, family and/or whānau, and the healthcare team in primary care. Graduates will benefit by having a qualification that recognises their meaningful contribution to primary care, their ability to provide administration and clinical support in roles within primary care, and a pathway to further qualifications. This qualification is not associated with professional registration or a clinical scope of practice.

The aim of this programme is to provide people with key skills and knowledge grounded in mātauranga Māori, which are required to provide clinical and administrative support across a primary care practice.

This programme focuses on primary care practice assistance through a mātauranga lens and includes the specific skills and knowledge required to perform routine clinical tasks under direction and delegation of a health professional.

  • Graduates of this programme will be able to bring a mātauranga Māori perspective and appropriate cultural sensitivity to all aspects of their work, including when:
  • engaging with tāngata, family and/or whānau accessing primary care.
  • contributing to the effective functioning of a primary care provider

HWC401 Te Tangi o te Putātara o te Whare Hauora

Workplace Communication

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  The purpose of this module is to develop an understanding of effective professional workplace communication. Tauira will examine their own behaviour and communication styles and how these impact conflict management and challenging conversation in a health and wellbeing setting. Tauira will also be introduced to reflection, new communication strategies, professional care ethics and professional conduct in a health and wellbeing setting.

HWC402 Manaaki Tangata

Basic Care and Support

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  The purpose of this module is to provide tauira with understanding and the ability to provide basic care and support to people with disabilities. Tauira will examine monitoring procedures, wound dressing techniques and procedures, pain management and spinal care procedures and processes. Tauira will also be coached to carry out professional level observations and assessments of the needs of people with disabilities.

HWC403 Ka pai ki Muri, ka ora ki Mua

Work in a Multi-disciplinary Team

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  The purpose of this module is to support tauira to learn about working in a multi-disciplinary team. Tauira will be supported to demonstrate positive communication and relationship development when working in a multi-disciplinary team in a professional health and wellbeing setting. Tauira will also be introduced to various standard ways of solving problems while working in a multi-disciplinary team.

HWC404 Te Tohu o te Ora me te Manaaki

Advanced Care and Support

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  The purpose of this module is to support tauira to learn about advanced care and support. Tauira will examine in-depth knowledge and support practices for conditions treated in a health and wellbeing settings. Tauira will also coached and expected to demonstrate their ability to contribute to client/patient care planning, assessment and review procedures and processes.

HWC405 Ngā Hauora Taumaha

Chronic Health Conditions

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  The purpose of this module is to support tauira to learn about chronic health conditions. Tauira examine patients with range of chronical health conditions and neurological conditions in a health and wellbeing setting. Tauira will also demonstrate their ability to provide effective and confident supports to staff and clients/patients when dealing with people with challenging and chronic health conditions.

HWC406 Hauora Mana Orite

Equity in Health Settings

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  The purpose of this module is to develop tauira’s understanding about equity in health settings. Tauira will have the opportunity to examine various types of stigma and discrimination and likewise demonstrate strategies that counter various types of stigma and discrimination in health and wellbeing settings. Tauira will also be introduced to various ways to encourage advocacy and empowerment in health or wellbeing settings.

HWC407 Ko te Kai o te Rangatira

Leadership in Health Care Settings

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  The purpose of this module is to support tauira to learn about leadership in health care settings. Tauira will have the opportunity to examine formal and informal leadership approaches and skills. Tauira will also be coached and expected to apply leadership skills to support patient/client health outcomes in health or wellbeing settings.

HWC408 Hauora Mahi

Health & Wellbeing Focus

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  The purpose of this module is to support tauira to learn about health and wellbeing foci. Tauira will demonstrate effective and confident support and care with vision impaired and hearing-impaired patients. Tauira will also learn about and demonstrate their ability to support the aged and behaviourally challenged patients based on effective observation of their needs and planning. Tauira will also be introduced and coached on effective support strategies.
