Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Rumaki, Reo Rua) (Te Kaupae 2)

Learn basic te reo Māori with this level 2 Māori language course.
This level 2 programme is for learners who have a basic understanding and ability in the use of te reo Māori and want to communicate with little support in familiar everyday contexts, and in Māori environments where they feel comfortable.

Learners will study the following:

  • Basic Māori vocabulary and grammatical structures
  • Be able to express basic connections to the land, environment and people of the area
  • Apply technical knowledge of foundation level reo Māori and develop respect for te reo Māori

  • Language structures to communicate genealogical links (kaumātua, tīpuna, tīpuna tuarua)

Description:From this paper, tauira will be able to use foundation level reo Māori to express connections to the land and the environment, prominent places and people of the area, as an expression of mana whenua. The content areas are:

REO203 Mana Reo 2

Course Type: Core

Description: From this paper, tauira will be able to apply technical knowledge of foundation level reo Māori in selected contexts and develop an emerging respect for te reo as an expression of mana reo. The content areas are: 

  • Māori alphabet

  • Dialectal difference
  • Language etiquette
  • Everyday language use
  • Foundation level karakia and waiata

REO204 Mana Ao Tūroa 2

Course Type: Core

Description: From this paper, tauira will be able to use foundation level te reo Māori to achieve tasks in specified contexts as an expression of mana ao tūroa. The content areas are: 

  • Māori alphabet
  • Foundation level language command
  • Dialectal difference
  • Language etiquette
  • Instructional language (family, work, and community context), relevant vocabulary (family, work, and community context)
  • Relevant language structures (family, work, and community context)
