I am at peace with the discomfort of my position as tauiwi, and look for ways to respond to the legacy of colonisation and to be part of the change that Pākehā must engage in to create a more just, equitable and respectful society in Aotearoa. I have a strong sense
of social justice, an instinctive desire and ability to build relationships, and a deep belief

in the power of language to bring about transformation. Each of these values underpin my ongoing study of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori; it is my strong belief that compassionate communication, service and leadership has the power to transform lives and society. This is my responsibility as a partner to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

 

Professional experience

Working alongside ākonga, whānau and community has been the focus of my many years as a kaiako and facilitator. Prior to joining Te Āwheonui, I worked in a diverse range of education contexts. I trained as a secondary teacher and, in the early part of my career, taught for many years in English-medium kura, combining my role of specialist English teacher with responsibilities in departmental leadership, pastoral care and mentoring of training and beginning kaiako. I also spent many years working in teen parent education supporting young women to develop agency and achieve success as learners.

My mahi as a facilitator began with Ara Poutama Aotearoa, the Department of Corrections, where I facilitated rehabilitation and reintegration programmes, working with groups and individuals to build motivation for change and develop strategies to create positive futures. This kaupapa continued in my subsequent role at Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu where I worked as a liaison teacher and online teacher of English.

These diverse experiences across a range of contexts deepened my understanding of the interconnectedness of our various systems of education, health, and justice. My awareness of my responsibilities as a partner to Te Tiriti o Waitangi was amplified, and I began my journey to learn te reo Māori. In 2020 I completed my Master of Education endorsed in Hōaka Pounamu: Bilingual and Immersion Teaching, a programme which promotes leadership and raises the knowledge of te reo Māori in bilingual, immersion and mainstream settings.

Joining Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi as part of the Te Āwheonui Centre for Professional Learning and Development in 2021 has been an opportunity to bring together my learnings over many years in education and apply them to the rich challenges of 21st Century Aotearoa, where we are increasingly called on to re-evaluate the past and re-imagine - with our ākonga, whānau, kura and hapori - the potential of our future together.
