The aim of this programme is to provide people with core skills and knowledge, grounded in mātauranga Māori, which are required to provide person and whānau-centred support in the health and wellbeing sectors.

This programme delivers the strand in Healthcare Assistance through a mātauranga Māori lens, which includes the specific skills and knowledge required for a range of roles and responsibilities in the aged, mental health, and disabilities sectors.

The purpose of this qualification is to recognise the skills and knowledge required to provide person-centred support in the health and wellbeing sectors. The graduates will benefit by gaining recognition of transferable skills and knowledge valued across the health and wellbeing sector, and the specific skills and knowledge required to perform a role within the sector.  

The community will benefit through the provision of high-quality health and wellbeing services by individuals who are trained to support people, whānau and family and the wider community.

Introduction to Person-Whānau Centred Care

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  This module supports tauira to understand ‘person-whānau centered care’ and to examine their own personal, beliefs, values and attitudes in relation to it. Tauira are also introduced to professional boundaries and legislation that will guide their work in the health and disability sector.

HWC302 Haumaru, te Mōrearea, me te Hauātanga

Safety and Risk in Health & Disability Settings

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  The module provides tauira with understandings and skills that will empower them to demonstrate holistic and culturally safe health and wellbeing care. Tauira will also examine definitions and signs of abuse and vulnerability in a health and disability workplace plus how to report concerns. Finally, health and disability assistants work relating to risk assessment processes and reporting requirements and stock management for an acute care programme are examined and practiced.

HWC303 Te Tangi o te Putātara me te Hauātanga

Communication in Health & Disability Settings

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  The purpose of this module is to introduce a range of communication skills, leadership skills and technologies used in health and disability sector workplaces. Tauira will also learn about and demonstrate positive communication and relationship development in a professional health and wellbeing setting. Tauira will also be introduced to behaviour management strategies, staff administration support systems and privacy requirements in health or disability sector workplaces.

HWC304 Hauora Mahi Tahi

Collaborative Wellbeing

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  The purpose of this module is to support tauira to begin to learn about collaborative wellbeing. Tauira will demonstrate effective and confident communication with patients and be coached to create culturally appropriate written and verbal reports in a health or wellbeing setting. Tauira will also be introduced to strategies that are effective in meeting personal client or patient needs in a health and wellbeing setting.

Health Support Strategies and Approaches

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  This module supports tauira to begin to learn about effective health support strategies and approaches. Tauira will be introduced to effective and appropriate models of care that can positively impact a range of function related conditions in a health and wellbeing setting. Tauira will also be supported to confidently demonstrate strategies and approaches that will solve staff and clients/patients function challenges.

HWC306 Te Whare Hauora Māori Holistic

Care Provision

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  This module supports tauira to begin to learn about holistic care provisions. Tauira will have the opportunity to learn how to examine holistic considerations when working with family/whānau in support of a client or patient. Tauira will also be introduced to dementia, palliative and end of life care systems and processes plus appropriate carer support strategies when working with those from the aged community.

HWC307 Te Whare Hauā Tangata

Disability Support Services

Course Type: Core

  • Description:  This module helps tauira to learn about multiple support and care needs in a heath or disability sector. Tauira will develop and demonstrate effective and confident support and care strategies for when they work with vision and hearing-impaired clients/patients. Tauira will also be introduced to staff and client/patient related support seeking problem solving strategies.
