Ngā korero o te wā

The joint initiative between BOPDHB, Te Rūnanga Hauora Māori o Te Moana ā Toi and Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi was officially launched at Whakatāne Hospital earlier this week. About 400 staff have expressed interest in learning te reo and tikanga Māori since the opportunity was raised earlier this year.

The joy of connecting to learning through Mātauranga Māori was a focus of a visit by the Governor-General, The Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy, to Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi last week.

State-of-the-art technology in Māori education will be showcased when the Governor- General visits tertiary provider Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi in Whakatāne next week.

It’s a day Henare (Hori) Ahomiro will never forget. A milestone, not only for Hori and his family, but a celebrated first also for Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, from which he graduated with a Master of Indigenous Studies – because graduating alongside him in March 2019 were daughters Kirimatao, with a Master of Māori Studies, and Ruahuihui, with a Doctor of Philosophy.

This was the message from speaker after speaker as Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi marked the graduation of more than 3,000 students on the day of the national remembrance service for victims of the Christchurch mosque attacks.

Accelerating regional development and business growth will be the focus of a summit organised by Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi will host the second Te Pūtake o te Riri Summit on Monday, March 11, and Tuesday, March 12, at its campus in Whakatāne.  The summit is supported through the Te Pūtake o te Riri fund administered by Te Puni Kōkiri. 

Nursing students training at indigenous tertiary institution Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi will use hologram patients to practise critical assessment and care, and virtual humans to study anatomy and physiology.

Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi graduate Aroha Ruha-Hiraka has been named this year's joint winner of the national Young Nurse of the Year Award.

Nursing student Tracy Black has been appointed chairperson of the New Zealand Nurses Organisation’s Māori student nurses committee, Te Rūnanga Tauira.
