He Tohu Ako Tawhiti, Bachelor of Mātauranga Māori

Background Summary:

I live in Whangarei. It’s not easy researching your mātauranga seven hours away from your hau kainga. There’s only so much tikanga my kaumatua will talk to me about on the phone! But through Awanuiārangi I’ve been able to get to know my Mātaatua whānau and tikanga – and their support has been awesome. Twice a year, we students hui in Whakatāne. It’s an important opportunity to share learning, and to learn about and respect the ways of other iwi. Like many others, my immediate whānau hasn’t had Te Reo Māori for several generations. Awanuiārangi opens the door to reclaiming our reo, tikanga, and mātauranga. At the same time, it encourages us to grasp the tools and technologies of the pākehā: to equip ourselves with the knowledge and strategies we need to engage and move forward. I enrolled because I want to raise my son with a good foundation in Te Reo Māori and tikanga, and hand this mātauranga on to him. I’m only on the first step of a journey that’s going to take me the rest of my life.
