Te Tohu Paetahi Ako, Bachelor of Education – Teaching (Tapiri)

Background Summary:

I had a teaching diploma in total immersion education, and had been teaching for five years. It was always my goal to attain a bachelor degree in teaching, but there was no programme that suited my needs ... until I heard about Tapiri. Through a one-year professional development programme, Tapiri offered the opportunity to upgrade my qualification, and the way it was delivered – through noho wānanga, online learning and self-directed learning – allowed me to continue teaching and to be at home with my whānau. Another bonus was that the noho wānanga were held at Whangarei, near my home in Kawakawa. I graduated in 2012. Out of 27 grandchildren, I’m only the second to graduate with a bachelor degree. It was a great achievement and it sets a standard for future generations. I also loved doing my written work in te reo — the language I prefer, the language I fought to learn. Because of the leadership skills I developed during Tapiri, I’m taking up many more leadership roles at school. I’m also able to look after trainee teachers during their practicums. It’s nice to be able to pay back the learning that I received.
