New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3)

This programme prepares you for tertiary study and an introduces you to a chosen career.

It has the following aims:

  • develop and enhance practical study skills for tertiary study
  • develop skills that support you to be successful when entering undergraduate study
  • increase literacy and numeracy levels to the expected levels for your chosen career and/or field of study
  • develop an inquiring mind
  • expose you to a range of information sources
  • begin to develop research knowledge and skills
  • understand the importance and acknowledge the source of knowledge
  • raise your awareness of the expectations and rigour of tertiary study
  • develop a culture of learning
  • promote personal and professional development and conduct
  • increase self-esteem and confidence
  • introduce you to Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori

CCP301 Kōwae Ako 1: Rangatiratanga – Introduction to Career Preparation

Course type:  Core

  • Description:  This course teaches students to identify and apply knowledge obtained from a variety of specialized sources relevant to their chosen field.  Students will also learn to manage own learning and work effectively as an individual and as a team-member to achieve relevant goals. On completion students will be able to solve problems and communicate clearly using a range of appropriate media. They will also be able to evaluate opportunities and develop plans for study and career pathways relevant to their chosen field(s)

CCP302 Kōwae Ako 2: Kaitiakitanga – An Introduction to Tertiary Study & Writing

Course type:  Core

  • Description:  This course teaches students to use a range of information sources to support their study.  Students will be introduced to a range of information sources, including Internet sources, libraries, and data bases.  
    Students will be introduced to a range of study techniques and learn to write good essays or reports, with appropriate referencing.

CCP303  Kōwae Ako 3: Whanaungatanga – Te Reo me ōna Tikanga

Course type:  Core

  • Description:  Students will be introduced to te reo and tikanga Māori, learning basic phrases, karakia and waiata. Students will learn to introduce themselves with a pepeha and a short mihi. They will also begin to assemble a basic vocabulary of te reo Māori used in their chosen career path.

CCP304  Kōwae Ako 4: Pūkengatanga – Science and Mathematics for an identified context

Course type: Elective

  • Description:  Students will be introduced to Science and Mathematics as used in their chosen career and study path. On completion of this course students will be able to use mathematics to solve problems and will have a knowledge of the sciences to enable them to pursue further study in their chosen field.

CCP305 Kōwae Ako 5: Manaakitanga – Major Project for an identified context

Course type:  Elective

Description:  Students will conduct a learning project into an area of their chosen field.  Students will also prepare a study and career plan, with goals and pre-requisites for entry into that career path.
