Health is an issue which affects us all. For Māori, it is a socio-cultural construction influenced by multiple factors and embedded in spiritual understandings and practises. Te Ōhanga Mataora Paetahi prepares students for registration as a nurse who are able to support whānau, hapū and iwi with a predominant focus on primary health care and community development, but not to the exclusion of other areas of nursing and clinical health practice.
Tauira on the programme will learn about effective delivery of health services to Māori within Māori health paradigms and tikanga Māori. To work effectively with Māori within the primary health care setting, you must possess some fluency of both te reo Māori and tikanga Māori, especially tikanga hauora. Thus, you will be prepared to deliver quality health services to Māori and other Aotearoa New Zealand citizens, and meet the cultural and nursing requirements of both Hauora Māori Providers and non-Māori health service providers. This programme provides another choice in health and nursing training, education and development.
