This Certificate is a 19 week programme for students wishing to gain an introduction to Māori customary fisheries issues, traditional harvesting and marine biology of commonly harvested kai moana species. The programme uses a kaupapa Māori framework for teaching and learning. You will learn the importance of Māori knowledge and tikanga in understanding fisheries issues, in particular customary fisheries.
On this programme you will learn about Kaitiakitanga, customary fisheries legislation and permits, marine biology of selected kai moana species and harvesting methods of common kai moana species. The programme can be delivered on your Marae and the timetable can be adapted to suit your Marae – for example, evening sessions, full time, based around weekend noho or a mixture of those. This programme can staircase students (and your Marae) on to the Certificate of Pouhono and then the Bachelor of Environmental Studies.
