Programme Overview

Level of Study: 4

This marae-based programme is designed to revitalise te reo, kawa, āhuatanga Māori and tikanga Māori. The certificate enables marae to bring together their members from around the country to learn from the collective knowledge about physical and spiritual wellbeing held by whānau, hapū and iwi. The course is available throughout the year. A range of papers covers many topics that affect our hapū and marae, including te reo, tikanga, Māori philosophy, waiata, mau rākau, kāranga, whaikōrero and the arts. There is also a series of science papers, ranging from kaitiakitanga to the health of the streams and mahinga kai.

Entry Details

Entry is open to applicants who meet the following requirements:
Minimum Age: 16 years old
Minimum Qualifications: Open entry
Additional Qualifications: At the discretion of the Head of School of Iwi Development and/or the Administration Manager
Special Entry Requirements: To participate in our programmes, a marae representative must first attend a presentation conducted by Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi. These are held at the Whakatāne campus on the first Wednesday of every month until enrolment targets are reached. The dates of these can be obtained from the School of Iwi Development. If invited, our presenters may travel to marae to give a presentation. An application can then be made by marae who would like to conduct the programmes.
