Programme Overview
Level of Study: 3
This 19-week certificate programme gives an introduction to Māori customary
fisheries issues, traditional harvesting and biology of commonly harvested kai
moana, kai awa and kai roto species. The programme uses a kaupapa Māori
framework for teaching and learning. You will learn the importance of Māori
knowledge and tikanga in understanding fisheries issues, in particular customary
fisheries. You will learn about kaitiakitanga, customary fisheries legislation
and permits, biology and harvesting methods. The programme can be delivered on
your marae and the timetable can be adapted to suit your marae, for example:
evening sessions, full-time, based around weekend noho or a mixture of those
options. This programme can staircase students (and your marae) on to the
Certificate in Te Pouhono and the Certificate of Te Wai Māori (Freshwater
Management) Level 4. From there, students can move on to the Bachelor of
Environment Studies.
