Bachelor of Humanities

Background Summary:

I’m in my second year of studying toward a Bachelor of Humanities with a double major in Indigenous Studies and Indigenous Policy. I saw how this degree could support my community development work. I work within kaupapa Māori, previously for my iwi, Ngāti Ranginui, developing strategies in areas such as health and youth development, and now as a youth development consultant and mentor, currently working with Child, Youth and Family.

My studies are giving me critical tools that will help strengthen our marae and communities. Every step of the way my studies have connected with my mahi, and have helped me become more creative and innovative in developing practical strategies for use within the communities I work with. The programme has also broadened and deepened my understanding of how mainstream systems work, and knowing how to work with policy enables you to make a difference within those systems.

The way the programme is taught fits in well with life. I have six children, work fulltime and my partner is also in her second year of a degree programme. We attend noho once a month over a long weekend and that integrates well with online learning for the rest of the month. If I were to undertake fulltime study through any other institution I wouldn’t be able to work.
