Bachelor of Education – Teaching (Tāpiri)

Background Summary:

After being away from teaching for nearly two decades, this degree programme really helped with thinking about and adapting to this new age of teaching the technology generation, and focusing on current approaches to education. I got a lot out of my studies. The programme gave me a good insight into academic theory behind teaching – critical theory, te mātauranga o te reo me ngā tikanga – and it broadened my way of thinking and therefore my horizons. I use the knowledge I learnt and reflect on it in my everyday teaching.

The other great positive about taking on the challenge of the degree programme was the whakawhanaungatanga. We all worked together, and that’s how we got through it. Last year I taught at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Taumarere at Moerewa, and being able to study through block courses meant I was able to keep on top of both my work and my studies.

I’m at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Kaikohe now, and looking at enrolling in a Master of Māori Studies. Having achieved a degree gives me confidence to take the next step, and I will do that with others from my Bachelor of Education group. We’ve established good study habits and it makes sense to keep up the momentum.
