Bachelor of Humanities

Background Summary:

I am in my final year of the Bachelor of Humanities degree, studying toward a double major in Indigenous Studies and Policy.  I would like to work within our iwi as a policy analyst.  However, the flexibility of the degree means there are many opportunities I could pursue, as policy underlines all work places.

I began this degree whilst working full time in Te Kohanga Reo. As it was noho wānanga-based it fit well within my busy schedule as an independent parent.  I was a little intimidated to return to study but I knew I had to take the leap for my son and I, and I’m so glad I did.  The support from kaiako has been amazing. They are committed to seeing us succeed. This degree has truly changed the way I look at the world. I now find myself applying critical thinking to many areas which were once invisible to me.

Te Awanuiārangi has chosen me to participate in an indigenous knowledge exchange programme for three months at the University of Northern British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.  I feel privileged and I’m excited to be going. I’m looking forward to experiencing First Nations tribal systems, communities and hau ora programmes, to making connections and studying different perspectives on indigenous matters.
