Te Ōhanga Mataora Paetahi (Bachelor of Health Sciences Māori - Nursing)

Background Summary:

I was in the first intake of the Ako ki te Wānanga Bridging to Nursing in 2014 and am now working to become one of the first ever graduates of Te Ōhanga Mataora Paetahi.

My aspiration to be a Māori nurse who contributes to the wellness of my whānau, community, hapū and iwi will hopefully inspire others to take up the wero and make a difference themselves.

As a teenager, I fell through the cracks in the education system and left school with few qualifications and little direction in life. As an at-home mum, I hadn’t considered nursing as a career path as I lacked qualifications and travelling out of the district to pursue studies was not an option. When this degree was launched in Whakatāne, it was the opportunity I was waiting for.

There were challenges and adjustments when I returned to studying. The lecturers and staff at Awhi Tauira student support nurtured and encouraged me through the Ako programme, which prepared me for the transition to degree-level study.

I have progressed so much both on a personal and intellectual level since I started studying. A whole new world of possibilities has opened up to me. Being with like-minded tauira, now friends, has been amazing and I’m proud to affiliate myself to not only my friends and whānau but also to the staff at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi.
