Master of Indigenous Studies

Background Summary:

In April 2014, 17 students from Te Tai Tokerau graduated with a Bachelor of Education – Teaching (BEd) degree. It was a fabulous celebration, not just for us as tauira but also for the many and varied sacrifices that our whānau made during this time. Although our rōpū discussed taking the next step in tertiary education, only four of us stepped up to the Masters plate.

With a shortage of beginning teacher jobs we embarked on another level of study that has exposed us to a higher level of critical thinking and like-minded people. We encourage our Awa-Tai Tokz whānau to follow in our footsteps in continuing with developing their mātauranga Māori.

The four of us who are studying together for our Masters motivate each other constantly and support one another. You have moments when you’ve had enough – but another one of us is always there to pull you back to where you need to be.
