Te Matatini 2011

Te Matatini National Kapa Haka festival 2011

Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi is proud to be sponsoring its Bachelor of Māori Performing Arts students who will be competing at Te Matatini International Māori Performing Arts Festival being held in Gisborne from 16-20 February 2011.

These students belong to 14 of the 42 groups competing and include groups such as Te Waka Huia, Te Whānau a Apanui, Te Taitonga and Porou Ariki.

Māori cultural art forms including kapa haka are a focus for Awanuiārangi and so it is an active sponsor and involved in numerous cultural events.

As well many past and present students and staff members will be participating as performers, tutors or judges. Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi wishes all those taking part and those representing the Mataatua rohe all the best for Te Matatini 2011.

Te Matatini will be held in the natural amphitheatre of Wai o Hika Estate located approximately 6 km west of Gisborne. Wai o Hika is the venue for the annual Rhythm and Vines concert between Christmas and New Year. Tairawhiti last hosted a national senior Māori performing arts festival 32 years ago in 1977.
