Te Matarae i Orehu supreme winners
Te Matarae i Orehu leave Te Matatini o Te Ra as the supreme champions of Te Matatini o Te Ra with the coveted premier award — the Duncan MacIntyre trophy, the prestigious best kaitataki tane and wahine titles plus trophies for the best moteatea, kakahu, poi and haka.
Auckland group Te Waka Huia came second overall and Mataatua representatives, Te Whanau a Apanui came third.
Te Hokowhitu-a-tu from Tokomaru Bay received first place for the whakawatea, Auckland’s Te Waka Huia received the top prize for the waiata a ringa, and Te Pou o Mangataawhiri best whakaeke.
Miriama Morrison-Hare was the kaitataki wahine award winner. She is the daughter of Te Arawa kapa haka legend Taini Morrison, who died in 2009. She had won the title of kaitataki wahine twice.
Group leader Wetini Mitai took out the kaitataki tane for the third time.
Mataatua had two groups in the final nine. As well as Te Whanau a Apanui, Opotiki Mai Tawhiti, also represented. The other groups included Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Waihirere and Whangara Mai Tawhiti.
Te Arawa will host the festival in 2013.
