Tuai: Maori Witness to the Industrial Revolution
Presentation by Professor Alison Jones, University of Auckland, and Professor Kuni Jenkins, Awanuiarangi, Tuesday 6 December, 3.30pm
Tuai, a young man from Ngare Raumati (south eastern Bay of Islands) travelled to England with his companion Titere in 1818. They stayed in England for several months. While they were there they lived in Shropshire, the heart of the Industrial Revolution. They saw ‘iron run down like water’ in the iron foundries, they made glass bottles and china cups, and visited a mine. They wrote letters (with assistance) that tell in detail about their adventures and insights. This illustrated talk discusses Maori interest in the technologies of Europe and the ways that Tuai and Titere may have understood their possibilities in Aotearoa.
Alison recently travelled to Shropshire to follow the footsteps of Tuai and Titere, and found traces of them there.
