About Associate Professor Dr Paul Kayes:

 

Paul’s current academic interests include his role as Academic Registrar and as Director of Te Whare Taiao. This means he has responsibility for implementing the Institute of Indigenous Science strategic plan and through that working with Iwi especially in areas such as marine biology and customary fishing. He has developed a range of new science academic and research programmes at Awanuiārangi from pre degree to Masters level.

Paul’s spare time is consumed by his family and their involvement in sport, especially surf life saving and water polo. Paul was the founding chair of Tauranga Water Polo Club, is a former chair and now Life Member of Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club and he was the President of Surf Life Saving Bay of Plenty.

  • Project managed the BOP Polytechnic/ Tauranga Moana Iwi Customary Fisheries project titled Tauranga Moana Iwi Customary Fisheries Committee. (2006). Kapo te Mahara, Kapo te Kupu: Customary and Traditional Fisheries Practices. Tauranga: Bay of Plenty Polytechnic; up till the time I left the Polytechnic.
  • 2011: Internal research grant of $30,000. This research will assist the Tauranga Moana Iwi Customary Fisheries Trust in its management of the Tauranga Moana Mataitai Reserve through improving its knowledge of practical kai moana enhancement measures applicable to identified Taonga species (kuku /mussels, tītiko/ mudsnails, pāua, kina, pipi, tuangi/ cockle).
  • 2009-2010: Contract for Service with Ministry of Fisheries for the BOP Iwi Fisheries Forum, Mai i Ngā Kuri a Wharei ki Tihirau. $115,432 (ex GST).
  • 2009 -2010: Ministry of Fisheries - $55,000 grant for Ngāti Awa Fisheries project.
  • 2007: Grant of $49,500 from Te Puni Kokiri for Customary database project at Ngaiterangi Iwi Inc.
  • 2005: Customary Fishing research grant in conjunction with the Tauranga Moana Iwi Customary Fisheries Management Committee - from Ministry of Fisheries of $93,000. Facilitated this project, supporting the TMICFMC Chair with its implementation and administration.
