About me:
Rāpata is a senior lecturer in Māori language, society and culture with the Bachelor of Humanities degree at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, Whakatāne campus. He has been a lecturer at the Universities of Auckland (1995-2001), Hawai’i (2002-5) and Waikato (2006-9) prior to coming to TWWOA. Rāpata has published two books Te Ao Māori: The Māori World (2007) and Te Reo Taketake: A Māori Language Course for Beginners (2008) and is currently working on a new publication called Mātauranga Māori: Māori Ways of Knowing. Rāpata research interests include Māori history, Māori sociology and language.
Teaching Responsibilities:
- Mao 101 – 106. Rāpata teaches elementary and intermediate level Māori language (Mao 101,102, 104,105), Māori society (Mao 103) and customs of the marae (Mao 106) as well supervising M.A and Ph.D students in Māori language, society and culture.
- The Māori language and cultural studies discipline is a major of the Bachelor of Humanities degree taught at TWWOA. The discipline focuses on Māori language acquisition as well as traditional and contemporary Māori society and culture.
- Mao 103 – Te Ao Māori (Semester A 2010) The programme is designed to provide students with a knowledge of traditional Māori society including: Māori connections to wider Polynesia, customs of the marae, Māori land tenure, Māori performing arts.
Current Research Projects:
Rāpata is actively engaged in several research projects with TWWOA in developing and publishing Māori language resources in print and digital format for the secondary schools Māori language curriculum.
